Why Some Types Of Insulation Is Better Than Others
Do you have a mounted staircase or ladder that leads to the attic? If so, there’s a good chance it’s acting as a large hole that leaks cooled or heated air out and brings undesired hot or cold air into the house! Consider this: even the tiniest gap around the attic door perimeter — as small as 1/32" (0.08 cm) — is like leaving a 5-square inch opening or window open all year! This is why an attic stair insulation cover that shields and puts a lid on air leaks is high recommended.

But a small gap around the attic stair door perimeter isn’t the only problem with them:
- Most stair doors are made of thin plywood. This means with the dramatic temperature differences between the inside and outside of the house, can cause the plywood to wrap causing even bigger gaps around the perimeter!
- Many stair doors are not designed well. As the attic door gets older, aging causes door springs to weaken and crack. This is, of course, besides the fact that even new attic doors have hinges that cause air leakages.
- Simply adding insulation to an attic door doesn’t work. Attempts to rid of an air leakage by placing fiberglass insulation over the stairway opening will not solve the problem. Insulation merely filters the air as it passes through. (How do you know? If you have dirty fiberglass insulation, there’s your answer.)
- Weatherstripping alone won’t solve the attic door problem. Due to the way the door is designed to close (back to font), weatherstripping without an insulating attic stair door cover will not be effective.
Fortunately, many commercially available attic stair insulation covers are affordable, easy to install, convenient to use, yet very effective at stopping air leaks. For example, some covers have been proven to reduce air transfer by at least 71%; this means, your attic door cover will pay for itself in one year, and help you save that much money each year thereafter.

So, don’t let your hard-earned money leak out the cracks. Invest in an attic stair cover today and keep more money in your pocket this summer.
