Do you have a mounted staircase or ladder that leads to the attic? If so, there’s a good chance it’s acting as a large hole that leaks cooled or heated air out and brings undesired hot or cold air into the house! Consider this: even the tiniest gap around the attic door perimeter — as small as 1/32" (0.08 cm) — is like leaving a 5-square inch opening or window open all year! This is why an attic stair insulation cover that shields and puts a lid on air leaks is high recommended.

attic,

But a small gap around the attic stair door perimeter isn’t the only problem with them:

  • Most stair doors are made of thin plywood. This means with the dramatic temperature differences between the inside and outside of the house, can cause the plywood to wrap causing even bigger gaps around the perimeter!
  • Many stair doors are not designed well. As the attic door gets older, aging causes door springs to weaken and crack. This is, of course, besides the fact that even new attic doors have hinges that cause air leakages.

  • Simply adding insulation to an attic door doesn’t work. Attempts to rid of an air leakage by placing fiberglass insulation over the stairway opening will not solve the problem. Insulation merely filters the air as it passes through. (How do you know? If you have dirty fiberglass insulation, there’s your answer.)
  • Weatherstripping alone won’t solve the attic door problem. Due to the way the door is designed to close (back to font), weatherstripping without an insulating attic stair door cover will not be effective.

Fortunately, many commercially available attic stair insulation covers are affordable, easy to install, convenient to use, yet very effective at stopping air leaks. For example, some covers have been proven to reduce air transfer by at least 71%; this means, your attic door cover will pay for itself in one year, and help you save that much money each year thereafter.

blown,

So, don’t let your hard-earned money leak out the cracks. Invest in an attic stair cover today and keep more money in your pocket this summer.

Weakness In Air Insulation

If you are moving into a home that has a garage or if you are looking to upgrade your door, insulation is a fantastic step in the right direction. If you spend a lot of time in your garage or if your garage is attached to your home, then you understand the need to have this space insulated year round. You are likely looking for help in insulating your door instead of going out and buying a new one. Luckily, there are many different ways in which you can insulate your garage door and the R Values of some of these techniques are quite high.

flat,

The route that most people take when it comes to insulating their garage door is to buy a kit. Many of the top kits out there are for metal, steel, and aluminum doors of various heights. Although there are several ways to insulate your garage door, the use of Styrofoam is most often used. Most of the top kits are made from Styrofoam and install in under an hour. The kits offer an R Value of 4.5, which is good, but not fantastic. If you do not want to use a kit, you can insulate your door yourself using raw materials bought from your local hardware store.

You can purchase polyurethane foam sheets from your local hardware store for a reasonable price, cut them into pieces, and affix them to the inside of your garage door. It is up to you how many sheets you want to use, but the more insulation you add, the better off you will be when it comes to those cold winter nights. If you want to go the extra mile, you can purchase a few feet of weather stripping to add to the sides and underneath of your door to stop drafts and to complete the insulation formula. Your R Value will depend on which type of foam you use, how much you use, and the amount of weather stripping you use. You can expect, however, to have an R Value over 5 if done properly.

If you are on a tight budget and you cannot afford the foam, simply using the weather stripping to stop drafts from coming in on the sides and underneath will help. It likely will not register much of an R Value, but if it is all you can do this season, you are better off taking this one step than not doing anything at all.

If you happen to have some wall insulation lying around, you could use that, but it tends to be unsightly and it can be dangerous to small children and pets. You will still need to add weather stripping in this instance, as well.

As you can see, there are several options available to the average homeowner if you are looking to insulate your garage door. Do not necessarily believe the sales person at your local hardware store if he or she tells you that you have to buy a brand new door. There are insulation options available to you and many of them install in no time flat.

Overview On Insulation Products

We do not insulate our buildings nearly enough. The costs savings in your electric and heating bill from a well-insulated house over a period of time are really quite significant. Whatever the energy costs of making and installing insulation, the energy savings are substantially larger.

extruded,

Almost all homes are being built without adequate insulation. It makes no difference whether you live in the cold north or the hot south. Air conditioning in a hot summer costs as much as heating in a cold winter.

The problem for most homeowners is that, unless you are remodeling, it is difficult to add insulation to the walls. However, most people can add insulation into their attics. That is good news, because increasing the level of insulation in your attic will substantially reduce your energy bill.

The summer air-conditioning bill for the house I purchased a few years ago in Houston, Texas, was running around $400 a month. I added insulation to the attic at a cost of around $900. I did the labor myself. It was a hot and nasty job, but I love the results. My highest summer bill is now $220. And in what is called winter in Houston, it is only the low 40’s (F) that causes us to feel the need to turn on any heat.

Even if we had saved only $50 a month, adding insulation to the attic would have paid for itself in a year and a half. Three years, if we had hired it done. From then on, it’s money that stays in my pocket. But we save more than that, not even considering our increased comfort.

So, if your attic is accessible, find an insulation contractor to estimate what it would cost to blow several inches of more insulation into your attic. They have a machine that blows loose insulation in through a large hose. It’s rather a simple job, really, though hot and nasty. Get the best price you can, but ultimately, the cost of the job will be meaningless when you see the drop in your electric bill through the hot months of summer – or conversely the drop in your heating bill in winter.

interior,

That is not all you can and should do just in your attic to reduce the energy costs of your home. Consider also an aluminum reflector stapled under your rafters and an attic fan for the hot summer months. If everyone with an attic added insulation, what a drop in energy usage this world would see! And you would have a lower electric bill as well.

Getting To Know Kooltherm Properties

When you take a look at your home, you will find that the garage is the largest part of your home that does not have insulation. This is one area that you might want to consider insulating to cut down on your utility bills every month.

 insulation,

Because the garage is connected to your home in many cases, insulating it can help you to stop losing energy through the garage. When you insulate the garage you will find that you will be able to save a great deal of energy. There are kits available that will help you to get your garage insulated on your own. It is actually a cheaper process to insulate the garage than it is to pay the extra energy bills every month.

Some people use their garage for other reasons than just a place to park the car. They will set up a work area inside the garage and this will require the area to be kept warm in the cold months and cooler in the hot months. There are a few different kinds of insulation that you can use on your garage to keep in well insulated. The kind that is made of a reflective foil is usually made up of a couple of layers of foam that is between the foil.

The other kinds of insulation that you an use on your garage is a polystyrene panel that are very easy to put on the door of your garage. You can have it installed by a professional insulation installer or you can choose to do it on your own. All you will need to get the insulation up yourself is a straight edge, tape measure and utility knife. Some of the kits that you can buy will have the knife included.

One of the biggest concerns that many people have is the need to conserve energy. It is something that you will need to do for your finances and to protect the environment. The garage can cause you to lose a great deal of energy in your home. This is particularly true of the door of the garage. This allows you to use your garage as anything else that you like instead of just a place to park the car.

kingspan,

The kits that you can buy for your garage insulation is usually designed for a standard door size. Even though the kits are designed for a standard garage door, you can get one that is designed for your unusual garage door. If you can’t find a kit that will work with your door size, you will be able to get insulation and cut it to size.

Green Benefits Of Insulation

There are several different types of ground floor:

1.Solid Concrete ground supported floor.

2.Suspended Concrete Slab floor.

3.Suspended Timber Joist floor

Each method uses a different type of construction material but each method has one thing in common. They all need to be insulated. The depth of insulation required depends on several things. The type of method used, the materials involved and the size and shape of the house.

floor,

A good rule of thumb is that the greater the perimeter length the greater the need to ensure a good depth of insulation. In a timber joist suspended floor you can use a flexible insulation roll such as rock wool. The depth to which you lay the roll will depend on both of the conditions stated above. The insulation is placed between the joists and suspended there by use of netting that supports the insulation.

Placing insulation to a depth of 300mm is normal but it is best to get some advice from a SAP ratings company who will be able to work out the best design for your needs.

In a solid or suspended floor where the insulation supports the concrete floor only rigid plastic boards that have a high compressive strength are suitable for use, Kingspan, Celotex and Springvale are a couple of market leaders in this area.

Options include but are not limited to polyurethane, foamed glass, expanded polystyrene and extruded polystyrene. The boards should be moisture resistant and if placed below the DPM (not a normal practice) should also be unaffected by ground contaminants.

Please note that while it is possible to place a floor screed over these boards and that these floors can be reinforced with steel bars, the insulation itself is not a structural material and they do not act as a structural material.

No matter, which floor detail you decide to use, you should aim to achieve a U-value of at least 0.15 W/m2K. This is a lower value than that required by the building regulations but in the interest of getting the best value from your home, you should aim at the best possible value that you can achieve rather than accepting the bare minimum.

polyurethane,

One thing to remember is this: no matter which floor design you choose you will need to place a edging of insulation around the entire perimeter of your house. This edging needs to be at least 50mm thick to be effective and must extend from the bottom of the horizontal insulation to above the top of your floor. Once your floor has been finished you can trim it off as required.

The only exception to this is of course the suspended timber floor, which already has the insulation the depth of the floor.

Remember this is going to be your home. Make the best of it.

The garage is usually the largest non-insulated area of the home and this makes the it a prime candidate for insulation. Taking this step can save you big bucks on your utility bill.

tr31,

The garage is often the single largest non-insulated space in a home. When the garage shares a common wall with the main structure, this could result in serious energy loss through the garage. Insulation is a way of saving energy by preventing its loss through the garage door. Garage door insulation kits are available that make this a simple process and a rather inexpensive one compared to the potential cost of the lost energy. There is often reason beyond energy drain to keep the garage cool or warm.

Many people use the garage area for other purposes such as a work area. When the garage is being used in this manner, the insulation is almost mandatory to maintain comfort in the work area. Garage door insulation comes in a couple of different types. Reflective foil insulation usually consists of two layers of heavy duty polyethylene foam between sheets of aluminum foil. The normal thickness of this foil is 5/16th of an inch.

Other forms of insulation include polystyrene panels that are even easier to mount on the door than the reflective foil insulation. Garage door insulation can be installed by professional installers for a minimal charge, but it is not difficult to mount the insulation yourself. In most cases, the kits require only a tape measure, straight edge, and a utility knife. Many kits even include the knife.

Energy conservation has become an environmental concern in addition to making sound financial sense. The garage is a major source of energy loss especially via the door. With a simple installation procedure and a garage door insulation kit, this problem is easily solved. The insulated garage can then become a work shop as well as a vehicle parking spot.

exterior,

Most insulation kits are designed for standard sized garage doors. These are usually 9 feet wide by 7 feet high for single doors and 16 feet wide by 7 foot wide for double doors. Although these are the standard sizes, it is possible to get kits ready made for more unusual sizes as well. If the door is a unique size and a kit is not available to match it, the reflective foil type insulation comes in bulk rolls that can be easily cut to size.

Many people know they pay too much in energy bills each month but aren’t sure what to do about it other than shell out thousands of dollars for new windows. There are some small things you can do to help stop the financial bleeding however. One of them is to insulate your electrical outlets.

urethane,

How do you know if you even need to do this trick? You can check this yourself pretty easily. It’s best when tested on a cold windy evening. Hold a candle next to the outlet. Any cold air blowing in from outside would cause the candle’s flame to flicker and dance around. Any smoke being generated would also start blowing so you can see the movement. Of course you could also have big air leaks in your windows if you haven’t properly insulated them, but if you’ve done that step already and have the candle flame closer to the outlet than to a window you can be pretty sure the draft is coming through those electrical switches.

If this happens to you, there’s good news. Insulating your outlets takes very little money and almost no time. You can purchase foam covers, called foam gaskets, for mere pennies and they are easy to install. Simply unscrew the outlet cover exposing just the outlet and the gaping holes around it. The foam cover looks like the outlet cover so you just slip it over the outlet and then cover it with the actually outlet cover. Screw it back on and then move onto the next one. If you have a large home you’ll take some time doing this to each one, but it will be well worth it. Not only will you be more comfortable and feel less draft in your home, but you’ll spend less money on heating and cooling bills. It’s a win-win for everyone.

Saving Money With Sheeting

Last month we chatted about how easy it is to put up the walls in our friendships when we have experienced "not so fabulous" women in our lives. Sometimes, depending on the scars both internal and external, we sometimes only allow people to see what we want them to see. It’s not always easy putting your self out there emotionally.

sound,

There are other times that so many of us have experienced a situation in our lives when we really felt like we didn’t have anyone to turn to either out of fear of their reaction or fear of exposure. The "What will they think" syndrome sets in. And, in many cases you’re right; keep up the walls and don’t let people in who are judgmental and incapable of lifting you up, being there and strengthening you in your time of need.

But, on the flip side, when you experience these feelings it means you are not properly insulated. Every one of us needs to surround ourselves with the right women. You need an insulation of women that will build you up, be there to listen to the pain and at the same time that will send you soaring and lift your spirits and celebrate life with you.

How do you find them? You look, you sift and you find. Sometimes it comes easily and other times it requires a little more sifting than others, but they are there. As you sift you will find different levels of friendships along the way, fitting many purposes. It will be a few that will end up being your real insulation. They will be the ones you can divulge and reveal it all too, trusting them in return. Trust, still remains one of the most important factors in any relationship. If you can’t trust them, you can’t insulate with them.

Regardless of the past, you have to insulate it will provide you with strength and power in the journey of womanhood!

Accessing The Thermal Qualities

Acquired wealth is like a pot of honey in the middle of an open field. For all the efforts invested in accumulating it, plans must be made to ward off men who will be glad to enjoy your sweet without any tangible contribution towards its accumulation.

Non insulated wealth are open to activities of financial predators especially the government via taxation while individuals and other organizations may have their own share via civil litigations.

One of the best avenues to insulate wealth is via insurance. This product is just paying someone ahead of time to take care of your expected disasters. Insurance remains a product you can never get when you have need of it. Thus effort must be made to put it in place before time. Insuring your assets is very key. Your car can damage something, it can kill humans or animals also your house could get burnt. Once insurance is in place, the properties must be replaced and in the other related cases the insurance bears the whole burden while you are at peace.

Quite on time, it is proper to enlist the services of experienced professionals in managing your wealth. The most important are the lawyers and accountants. These people vet all your documents before you appendage your signature on it. In mortgages and related situations, exculpatory clauses are enshrined in such agreements. The services of these people may look exorbitant, however they save one a lot of money and time against schemers.

Turning your properties and asset into a trust is yet another wealth insulator. When assets are placed in trust, it is technically not yours again but well under your control. It keeps your assets out of lawsuits targets, liabilities, estate taxation and creditors. It remains a sanctuary for safe keep of wealth.

Also, your business could be set up as a cooperation or public limited company depending on your country of domicile. It helps a business owner to become quoted in capital market place. Such steps gives the business another legal and different personality. This avenue makes it possible for immortalizing a name or business and bringing in more people to share in your largess, yet under your firm control.

This approach is not a respite of the rich alone. The benefits of getting it done out lasts the cost. If the Rockefellers and their likes used it perfectly, why not you.

Wasting the hard earned money that the average homeowner takes home is not a fact that should be taken lightly and yet the majority of homeowners are losing money every day without even realizing. Even while sleeping, money is flying out the window unless the insulation in the attic has been upgraded using a radiant barrier.

thermal,

Most building codes are in place to ensure the minimum requirements. Unfortunately the "minimum" building codes are laughable and poor at best. These codes provide just enough assurance to the homeowner that the structure won’t collapse and will keep the rain and wind from rushing throughout. This may sound like an over simplified extreme, but essentially it’s true.

Insulation in stock houses is the minimum that most builders can get by with and in some cases, depending upon how thorough the building inspector, many roofs, attics, and ceilings may not have adequate insulation throughout the entire structure. A radiant barrier is the perfect solution to help reduce the problem of excessive heating and cooling costs. With a radiant barrier lain on top of any existing insulation in the attic, temperature fluctuations can be reduced.

Many radiant barriers available, like many products now, can have their origins traced back to space age technologies and military research. The same science that has been used by NASA for astronaut’s space suits is present in these radiant barriers for home and commercial buildings. This radiant barrier insulation doesn’t allow heat to penetrate and pass through into the living area like traditional spun fiberglass insulation. It actually reflects the outside temperature allowing the interior temperature to be maintained with minimal heating or cooling.

roof,

This will be of great benefit for anyone concerned with saving money and electricity or gas. By reducing the need to cycle your heating and cooling system on and off as often, the homeowner will save wear and tear on the equipment as well as their hard earned income. Over a year’s time and with energy costs consistently on the rise, the savings will add up. This will be an investment that will truly pay for itself with savings.
