All new houses must confirm to very high building standards to allow them to be as energy efficient as possible. If you’re house is quiet old then its possible that your house hasn’t been insulated correctly and you’re wasting a lot of money through your walls, roof and floor. Don’t be worried though – this is a problem that can be easily rectified. You can insulated your house for quiet a low fee. Insulation usually pays for itself after about 3/4 years but lasts the lifetime of the house.

of,

A badly insulated floor can be expensive for homeowners. Energy experts have worked out that 15% of heat loss in a building is through the floor if its poorly insulated.

To insulate a floor, you should begin by lifting the carpet and any floorboards underneath. The joists underneath should be filled with some kind of insulation material. There are various types of floor insulation materials you can use. Netting is often used to support the floor insulation material. The netting will need to be stapled to the joists in order to keep it in place.

To add an extra layer of insulation you can add a sheet of plaster board above the insulation material. This not also acts as heat insulation but also adds an extra layer of soundproof.

thermapitch,

Apart from the insulation material and the plaster board you can also add a layer of carpet on top of the floorboards to improve the floor insulation. Again the carpet will add an extra layer of soundproof to the floor.

Winter’s on its way and with energy bills soaring it can be tempting to leave the central heating off and put on a jumper instead. There is an easier way to save money however, and thousands of homes in the UK could benefit. The solution is better insulation – an investment that will help you save money for years to come.

insulation,

When you put your heating on, heat is lost through many areas of your home including the walls, floor, roof and windows. This means that it not only takes longer to heat up your house, using more energy, but your rooms will cool down more quickly too, leading to you having the heating on more often. With improved insulation it will take less energy to heat the same space and the heat will be retained for longer. You’ll also find that your house stays cooler in summer so there’s a benefit all year round.

Loft insulation is what most people know about, but many don’t realise just how much of an energy saving it can lead to. It acts by trapping the heat that rises upwards through your house and it’s so easy to install it can be done without professional help. Even if you already have loft insulation you can increase it for an even greater effect – thick insulation can save you literally hundreds of pounds a year.

Cavity wall insulation fits into the gap between the layers that make up your external walls. It stops the heat from passing through the bricks to the outside, meaning that your rooms stay cosy in winter and cool in the summer. Cavity wall insulation needs to be installed by a professional but is relatively inexpensive and can save you over 100 a year.

Many people don’t realise that heat can actually be lost through draughty floors. This is the same effect as when noise carries from one terraced house into another through the floors – if you fill in the gaps the heat will stop escaping (and if you’re in a noisy terrace you could find it a bit quieter too!). You can insulate your floors easily using a DIY sealant. Avoid sealing any airbricks however as these are important for good ventilation.

The most common form of insulation in your home is double glazing. It’s amazing the difference this can make, and many of us only really notice it if we stay in a house that only has single glazing. Single glazed windows are prone to condensation – something that double glazing just isn’t susceptible to. Double glazing creates a barrier that traps heat, and it also lowers the amount of noise too. Double glazing can also save you over 100 a year.

Although there’s an initial outlay to install the insulation in the first place, you can do a lot of the work yourself. The savings add up to several hundred pounds a year so it’s definitely worth it in the long run. For the environmentally-conscious among us, it allows you to lower your carbon footprint too.
